October is nearly here and that means it’s time for a month of Halloween-related programming on Sounds of Cinema. Each episode throughout October will feature a different spooky theme. Here’s what’s in store in 2022:
October 2: Monstrous Feminine
The first episode of October 2022 will include reviews of Don’t Worry Darling, Pearl, and the remake of Goodnight Mommy and feature a look at films in which women or femininity are villains, killers, or monsters. The horror genre is sometimes accused of misogyny and while there are a few films like that, the issue is oftentimes more nuanced. These films reveal the complexities of male and female relationships and offer insight into women’s experiences.
October 9: Nosferatu and Silent Horror
2022 is the 100th anniversary of F.W. Murnau’s silent masterpiece Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. A loose (and unauthorized) adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, this film has become a touchstone of the horror genre and remains one of the most influential movies of its era. This episode will take a look back at Nosferatu and consider its ongoing legacy. The program will also take a look at other significant horror films of the silent era.
October 16: Movies of 1982
1982 was an extraordinary year for cinema and especially the horror, science fiction, and fantasy genres. Tune in for a look at films such as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Blade Runner, The Thing, TRON, Conan the Barbarian, Halloween IIII: Season of the Witch, Poltergeist, and more.
