Blade: Trinity (2004)
Premise: In this third film in the Blade franchise, Blade (Wesley Snipes) must battle the reawakened Dracula (Dominic Purcell).
What Works: The film has added a lot of humor, mostly through the character of Hannibal King (Ryan Reynolds) who displays a comic timing that is very promising. The addition of King and Abigail Wistler (Jessica Biel) helps give the film some new direction.
What Doesn’t: The film is a disappointment. The action sequences do not have the energy of the previous films and lack a sense of drama. The story as a whole is flawed. It does not take advantage of the rich mythology established in the first two Blade films. The villains, who were a high point of the previous films, are silly, one-dimensional cartoons in Blade: Trinity. Most disappointing is the character of Dracula, a wooden, uninteresting character that looks like he belongs in a professional wrestling ring instead of a movie.
Bottom Line: Where the original Blade was a bold and unique comic book and vampire film and Blade II delivered an emotional story with a strong narrative, Blade: Trinity is not up to par. It is fun and delivers some strong action sequences but does not live up to its predecessors.
