The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
Directed by: Paul Greengrass
Premise: A sequel to The Bourne Identity. Ex-assassin Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) finds himself hunted by the CIA when he is framed for the murder of two agents.
What Works: This is an edgier and more intense film than Identity and is just as smart. The film’s action sequences retain what was great about the original film in that, as elaborate as they are, the scenes are grounded enough that they feel plausible and that makes it much more exciting.
What Doesn’t: There are a few gaps in the logic toward the end. The film wraps up fairly quickly and we are left to wonder what will become of Bourne but that may be covered in a third film.
Bottom Line: The Jason Bourne films are some of the best spy films ever made and Supremacy is a superior action film. It challenges the audience’s intelligence and moves around with a great energy that feels organic and authentic, especially compared to the over-the-top action films flooding the market.
