A legacy sequel is a film released at least ten years after its predecessor and continues the story and characters of the earlier films. This has become an ever popular approach especially as Hollywood caters to nostalgia with established franchises.

Legacy Sequels of the 2000s and 2015
Several films of the 2000s set the stage for the legacy sequels that came later including Freddy vs. Jason, Rocky Balboa, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The year 2015 saw an explosion of popular legacy sequels such as Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Creed, and Jurassic World.

Following the success of several high profile legacy sequels, Hollywood began creating follow ups to popular titles of the 1980s and 90s including Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Blade Runner 2049, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Dumb and Dumber To, and Top Gun: Maverick.
