October is here and that means it’s time for a month of Halloween-related programming on Sounds of Cinema. Each episode throughout October will feature a different spooky theme. Here’s what’s in store in 2025.
31 Days of Spooky Soundtracks on Facebook
Every day throughout October Sounds of Cinema will highlight a different spooky soundtrack on the show’s Facebook page. The titles will range from classic to contemporary scores as well as soundtrack albums. Be sure to like and subscribe.
October 5: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Retrospective
2025 is the fiftieth anniversary of the release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This program will look back at the legacy of that film with interviews with Jeffrey Weinstock, author of a monograph on The Rocky Horror Picture Show published by Wallflower Press and the editor of Reading Rocky Horror: The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Popular Culture published by Palgrave Macmillan, and Brian Watson-Jones, the cast director of Transvestite Soup, the Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow cast in the Twin Cities Metro Area.
October 12: Scary Fairy Tales and Spooky Urban Legends
A lot of fairy tales were horrific and violent, especially the earlier versions before they were sanitized by contemporary publishers and media companies. But some filmmakers have sought to reinstate the horror and this program will look at movies rooted in fairy tales such as The Ugly Stepsister and The Death of Snow White and adaptations of urban myths like When a Stranger Calls and Candyman.
October 19: The Phantom of the Opera Retrospective
2025 marks the one hundredth anniversary of the silent film adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney. This episode will look back at many of the film adaptations of Gaston Leroux’s novel including some off beat inspirations like the Phantom of the Mall and The Phantom of the Paradise.
October 26: 2025 Horror Movies/KMSU Pledge Drive Special
Different stations will air different programs. Tune in 89.5 KQAL FM in Winona for a catch-up on reviews of the horror films released so far in 2025. Then tune into 89.7 KMSU FM in Mankato for a special pledge drive edition of Sounds of Cinema.
October 31: Sounds of Cinema Halloween Special
The annual Sounds of Cinema Halloween Special, featuring a mix of music and clips from scary films, will air at 11pm CST on 89.5 KQAL FM and at midnight (after Here There Be Dragons) on 89.7 KMSU FM. The program will also air on 90.1 KOJB FM in Leech Lake. Broadcast details are forthcoming.
