Mutiny (2026)

Premise: A bodyguard (Jason Statham) goes on the run when his employer, a shipping magnate, is murdered. He boards a rival company’s vessel and discovers a container of refugees being trafficked. He teams with an officer (Annabelle Wallis) to save the refugees from the crew.
What Works: When Mutiny gets to the action, the film generally works. This is Die Hard on a boat and Mutiny is brutal and focused. Taking place at sea, our heroes are trapped on the boat. There is nowhere to flee which forces the characters to be crafty, creeping around the ship and setting up distractions. The fight scenes are done well. There is plenty of bone-breaking action but the filmmakers don’t overdo the fight choreography or the shootouts. There is an efficiency to the set pieces that grounds the violence in reality. For viewers who enjoy Statham’s action pictures, Mutiny does provide the audience what they’ve come to see.
What Doesn’t: Jason Statham’s action movies generally adhere to a formula. At least as far back as The Transporter, Statham plays gruff but honorable tough guys who are called to protect innocent people. Some movies have done that very well. Mutiny does not. Part of the problem is the set up. The film takes quite awhile to get to the action. The early portion of the movie is about a business deal and Statham’s employer is murdered by a rival shipping company CEO. The murder is supposed to motivate Statham’s character but this moment has no emotional impact. Statham is not renowned as a dramatic actor but he can convey charm and gravitas. That’s not the case here and Statham feels disconnected from the drama. A lot of details don’t make sense, namely the conspiracy plot. It’s overly convoluted and comes across forced. Later in the movie a United States naval boat intercepts the cargo ship. They know the identity of Jason Statham’s character, they even know his face, and yet the crew does not recognize him. Once on the boat, Mutiny has a compelling premise; Statham’s character must save trafficked women and children. The movie does not exploit its central idea. The innocent people are just bystanders. They are never in imminent danger and they get very little screen time or meaningful participation in the action. Mutiny pairs Jason Statham with a heroic ship officer played by Annabelle Wallis. She has very little to do. She could have been eliminated from the story altogether with very little lost.
Bottom Line: Mutiny is a below average Jason Statham action picture. A lot of the plotting is slapdash and the familiar elements feel phoned in. The middle of the movie works as a barebones action picture but everything around it is confusing and unengaging.
