The Influencer Project (2026)
Directed by: Mike Nybroe
Premise: A social media influencer (Chiara King) travels to Copenhagen to be part of a tourism documentary. She is followed by a stalker.
What Works: The Influencer Project merges fiction and reality. Real-life social media personality Chiara King plays a dramatized version of herself and the movie is made as a pseudo-documentary. The style of The Influencer Project is mostly convincing, especially in sequences showing behind-the-scenes moments usually excised from documentaries and social media feeds. The film has a sense of how and why social media moments go viral and the way artificiality can become reality. The last half hour of The Influencer Project is fairly scary as King faces her stalker in a dimly lit warehouse. King comes across genuinely scared. It’s a familiar slasher movie scenario but these scenes are done effectively.
What Doesn’t: For a pseudo-documentary, a lot of The Influencer Project is unbelievable. King is shadowed by a documentary crew profiling her time in Copenhagen. It’s supposed to be a mutually beneficial relationship with Copenhagen’s tourism industry boosted by King’s social media feed. It is soon obvious that King is being stalked at which point it makes no sense for the filmmakers to continue producing their documentary. This would be a perfect moment for the documentary producer and director to butt heads with warring priorities that would parallel King’s own struggle with fame and privacy. The film does nothing with this tension, squandering that potential and creating a serious credibility problem. The reveal of the stalker’s identity suggests a critique of social media’s effects on its users. The film does nothing with those ideas. It’s not ambiguous. The film just has nothing to say. And given that The Influencer Project opens with a teenage girl live-streaming her suicide, the thoughtlessness of the movie is callous and off-putting.
Disc extras: Will be available on disc and digitally on November 30th.
Bottom Line: The Influencer Project has some scary moments and as a pseudo-documentary it is generally well assembled. But this movie takes on pressing issues of safety, technology, and media responsibility and does nothing new or interesting with it.
