Review: Clown Panic (2026)

Clown Panic (2026)

Directed by: Ed Perkins

Premise: A documentary about the 2016 killer clown panic when television news and social media drove a national hysteria about clowns.

What Works: In the fall of 2016, America was overwhelmed with killer clown content. Driven by a combination of lurid news stories, dishonest social media posts, and gullible audiences, a brief but intense moral panic took shape. Some people were intensely afraid that killer clowns were stalking their neighborhoods and preying on children. The clown hysteria was just that—there were no killer clowns—but it did have real life repercussions. Performers saw their livelihoods collapse, neighborhoods mobilized citizen patrols, and people wearing clown paraphernalia got assaulted by vigilantes. The documentary Clown Panic takes a close look at how and why all of this happened. As depicted in the film, the hysteria originated in low-income communities. Hollywood has a history of looking down on poor people but Clown Panic is fair in its approach. The filmmakers interview several key witnesses and let them explain themselves without cheap shots in the editing. The filmmakers understand that the audience for this documentary is likely to overlap with the horror community and the filmmaking style appeals to those viewers. This keeps the documentary entertaining but the filmmakers show good judgment, holding back on the scary and silly elements when things get serious.

What Doesn’t: There is an important angle to this story that Clown Panic doesn’t quite address: why did clowns get such traction at that moment? Clowns have been in the culture for decades and this panic predated the release of 2017’s It and the Terrifier series. It’s likely that clowns were not really the issue. Rather, they came to represent some other, more elusive anxiety occupying the culture at that time. If, in the final analysis, the clown panic wasn’t really about clowns then we ought to ask ourselves what was really bothering us. The documentary never digs that deep.

Disc extras: Available on Hulu.

Bottom Line: Clown Panic is a worthwhile documentary. The implications of the 2016 killer clown panic reach further than even this documentary is able to grasp but the filmmakers have created an entertaining yet thoughtful dossier.
