The Strangers: Chapter 3 (2026)
Directed by: Renny Harlin
Premise: Immediately following the events of the previous installment, Maya (Madelaine Petsch) has survived continued attacks by a group of masked strangers. She discovers the motives behind the killings as her sister come to town.
What Works: The first two installments of the Strangers reboot trilogy failed to impress, in part because Chapter 1 was a worse off remake of the original 2008 film and Chapter 2 was an uninspired collection of slasher movie cliches. The Strangers: Chapter 3 finally gets to some original material. After being on the run for most of the second movie, Maya confronts her attackers and the masked killers get a full backstory that ties the flashback sequences to the present action. Rather than just trying to kill Maya, the killers try to recruit her which is a much more interesting premise.
What Doesn’t: Third chapters of a trilogy are usually where all the setup is paid off. The Strangers: Chapter 3 is handicapped by the lack of setup in the first two films. Hints were dropped and the three chapters do fit together but not in a way that creates an interesting whole. The second part was a chase movie and so the third installment is saddled with introducing too many new characters and new ideas. Maya’s sister comes to town along with her boyfriend and a bodyguard. No one is characterized and they don’t really do anything. As strongly hinted in the first two chapters, the townspeople know what’s happening but turn a blind eye so long as the killers prey on outsiders. Now that the killers have murdered townies, that ought to spark repercussions but nothing happens. Maya is abducted by the killers who intend to make her part of their murderous team. There is no sense of real danger that Maya is going to turn. The killers and the filmmakers seem to believe that just witnessing murder is enough to turn someone into a wanton killer. It’s silly and reveals the shallowness at the root of this reboot project.
Disc extras: None.
Bottom Line: The Strangers: Chapter 3 may be the best installment of the worst trilogy. The finale introduces new ideas and demonstrates some ambition but the payoff is uninteresting at best.
