Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass (2026)
Directed by: David Wain
Premise: Gail (Zoey Deutch) faces a crisis in her relationship when her fiancé cheats on her with his celebrity crush. She travels to Los Angeles to settle the score by having sex with actor John Hamm.
What Works: As its title implies, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is a goofy and eccentric film. It was directed and cowritten by David Wain who also helmed Wet Hot American Summer and Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass has a similar tone. It’s admirable how committed everyone is to the concept. Zoey Deutch is cast in the title role and she plays Gail as a woman of perpetually sunny disposition. She is exceedingly earnest and Deutch plays the character well. The movie is full of cameos with John Slattery, Weird Al Yankovic, and Jennifer Aniston playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The cast are game for the movie’s eccentricities and they are willing to be ridiculous. Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is loosely modeled after The Wizard of Oz. Gail Daughtry’s name is a reworking of Dorothy Gale and in her journey through Los Angeles she makes friends that resemble the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow. While there’s not much substantive about those allusions, the Wizard of Oz connection does assist the film’s pitch. There is an audience for Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass and the viewers who get it are going to love it.
What Doesn’t: The qualities that distinguish Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass are also the film’s greatest liability. This film probably won’t appeal to a mass audience precisely because of its strange tone. Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass has the feel of an inside joke. The preponderance of celebrity cameos, the pitch of the performances, the singular sense of humor, and the show business aspects of the story make this feel less like it was made for an audience and more like it was made for the people in it. As a result, viewers may find themselves outside the movie. This story is about a naïve woman breaking out of her sheltered existence. Gail has been with the same man since high school but when her confidence in that relationship is shaken Gail sets out on a journey that broadens her horizons. The film doesn’t actually say anything about desire, celebrity, or sexuality.
Bottom Line: Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass could become a cult movie. There is an audience out there for this and if they find it, they’ll probably love it. For everyone else, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass is bizarre and campy and looks like it was more fun to make than it is to watch.
